A brand new 5k PB!

Nothing fills me with terror quite like the thought of racing a 5K… So when I saw one nestled in next to a 16 mile LSR (long slow run) during week 9 of my training schedule I was apprehensive to say the least. A 5km race is basically an all out effort for 3.1 miles, 3.1 miles you say? easy! seriously if you find an all out 3.1 mile run easy you are most certainly doing it wrong. Luckily the amazing organisers and volunteers who put on Bushy parkrun every week (plus parkruns all over the country) make it as easy and painfree as possible for a 5k-phobe like myself to go out and race and have it officially timed on a Saturday morning.

As predicted it was tough. I successfully forgot my music (a key componenet to zoning out the 5k pain) and got a weird side stitch that stuck around the entire course… The only way I could alleviate the pain of the side stitch was to briefly run bent from the waist at a 90 degree angle for a few seconds every 5 minutes or so, yes I looked mad. My previous parkrun PB was 23.13, I knew I could run faster than that but how much faster I had no idea…

Check it out! A shiny new PB! I was beaten by many many children under the age of 15 and a man pushing a double buggy but that is the joy of parkrun. I really really want a Sub 22 and I think with optimal conditions I could probably squeak one in the near future but for now we have a marathon to run!
